Studio Practice

My multi-disciplinary practice explores the overlooked beauty and fleeting moments of everyday life across the Arab world. Traveling extensively throughout the region, I use my sketchbook as a visual diary to chronicle my observations of the people, places and things I have seen on my journey.​

Through drawing, I record fleeting moments of human experience: men smoking shisha in the cafe, cabbage seller boys at the roadside; celebrate iconic landmarks with the Qushla clock tower and Aladdin’s Lamp sculpture; or the capture the crumbling romance of forgotten ruins such as the bombed buildings of Mosul, or the abandoned swimming pool of Saddam Hussein.​​​​​​

I then develop scenes from my sketchbook into a larger multi-disciplinary art practice combining printmaking with textiles and installation. The finer details of a pencil sketch are transformed into the striking bold lines of a linocut design, digital or silkscreen print.

 

To deepen this visual dialogue, I draw upon my passion for Islamic Arts, especially in the Arab world’s deep tradition of decorative textiles, to create my own series of layered hand-sewn tapestries and prints on decorative fabric .
